(Nov. 13) -- It's official: There's water on the moon.
NASA's LCROSS probe discovered beds of water ice at the lunar south pole when it impacted the moon last month, mission scientists announced today.

"Indeed, yes, we found water. And we didn't find just a little bit, we found a significant amount," Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist and principal investigator from NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif.
The LCROSS probe impacted the lunar south pole at a crater called Cabeus on Oct. 9. The $79 million spacecraft, preceded by its Centaur rocket stage, hit the lunar surface in an effort to create a debris plume that could be analyzed by scientists for signs of water ice.
Scientists have suspected that permanently shadowed craters at the south pole of the moon could be cold enough to sustain water frozen at the surface. Water has already been detected on the moon by a NASA-built instrument on board India's now defunct Chandrayaan-1 probe and other spacecraft, though it was in very small amounts and bound to the dirt and dust of the lunar surface.

NASA plans to return astronauts to the moon by 2020 for extended missions on the lunar surface. Finding usable amounts of ice on the moon would be a boon for that effort since it could be a vital local resource to support a lunar base.
The impact was observed by LCROSS's sister spacecraft, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, as well as other space and ground-based telescopes.
The debris plume from the impacts was not seen right away and was only revealed a week after the impact, when mission scientist had had time to comb through the probe's data.
NASA launched LCROSS — short for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite — and LRO in June.

just saying.

By 2020? What the f**k?

We did it in the 60s, and now it's going to take us over 10 years to get someone on the moon? o.O

still dont really see the point in all this, there is still not enough water on the moon to do much with and at nasa's speed the moon base will be built by 2100 lol

There are a ton a skeptics about the moon landing in the 60's. I did the math and it seems like a far distance for the time they spent traveling. Another thing I'm not sure about is the earths force of gravity and how much it would slow down the ship. The earths force of gravity is strong enough to keep the moon in check. Any conspiracy theorists out there?

Ive watched a few shows on some conspiracy theories..

Any conspiracy theory about any subject will make alot of sense though, so its hard to really "choose a side"

The one I watched was talking about the stars in the background of the images/video of the "moon landing" and how there were none.. The moon has a very thin atmosphere and that means you would be able to see stars.. right? ill ask my astronomy professor on monday about this and I am sure he will have some real good input...

^^x2 Also on the shadows that the rocks didn't had, or that the flag was moving, when there's no wind, etc
Who knows.............
I do know that there's a company that is building a hotel in space and they're taking reservations right now
(like millions for a trip)
Sorry I don't have the link............

but water uh...interesting............

mybuster covered the moon landing photo. they said it could of been staged. they made there own picture and it was the same thing. throught the epsidoe they did explain why the flag could have moved and why the rocks have 2 diffrent direction of shadows etc....

very interesting stuff

go to an observatory that has a powerful telescope. see if they will point it at the lunar lander.

Why does it really matter if theres Water on the moon?
If it didn't matter, why did you visit this thread? You must be wondering why are so many scientists amazed with this discovery. Water is a key ingredient that can sustain life. Water=possibility of life. You=Uthden Troll.

Warning! troll spray does NOT work on this creature.

Shiznit, Im not one of those guys who thinks i'm always right but I found a decent link against that theory. check out question #2 on this link. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://calgary.rasc.ca/images/lunar_landing_sites_small.gif&imgrefurl=http://calgary.rasc.ca/moonscope.htm&usg=__fJwYO380ou42f7RNodAqF-XZLKs=&h=330&w=331&sz=27&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=1f_nFQ4AqcGUKM:&tbnh=119&tbnw=119&prev=/images?q=the+lunar+lander+telescope+pictures&gbv=2&hl=en
Have you seen the lunar lander yourself? If you did, that's pretty cool. I thought it's impossible. There is a big observatory in the Oakland hills that I visited a few years ago. I heard the biggest telescope in the world is in Hawaii.
