I would like to turbocharge my 98 civic ex. I would like to know what kits are good for my car and how much boost I can run on a stock engine. Also I was wondering how much it would cost me to get a turbo kit installed.
ChewiSi said:Custom kit....end of story. cheapest.
that VERBAL said:yeah, custom turbo.....for a kid who knows diddly squat about turbocharging
honestly it isn't even an option unless he wants to do a lot of research, and even then....he will have to find a shop to tune him unless he knows somebody.

Custom turbo defiantely is the route to go, granted you are knowlegable on the subject. A good turbo kit can be pieced together for under 700-800 bucks....less if you can get piping fabrication done cheap.
I'd read up on forced induction theory and actually get a grip on what is really going on before jumping into boost.
no SS Autochrome
that is not an 800 setup.Project Dc2 said:800 bucks if you go with completley new parts or well . parts that arent very good .
ill break it down for you.
440CC injectors 225$ shipped
manifold downpipe. dumptube flex pipe o2 bung package. lifetime warranty by me. ive been sellin on hT for 3 years now . no manifolds returned to me due to cracking or malfunction 575$ shipped
tial wastegates when purchased with manifold 20)$
garrett t3t4 turbo REAL not fake ebay stuff 550$ shipped
FMIC piping kit mild stel mandrel bent. tig welded 240$ plus connectors/clamps 65$
oil feed and return kit 90$
intercooler JRC 6" 220$ shipped ( lil less but lets just do a lil rounding)
crome tuned by a localk. depending where you are. it really depends on their pricing etcc.
theres little stuff like nuts n bolts but this is a complet enew kit with warranty and obviously a reputable seller like me standing behind it. PM me if you're interested or got more questions i can help you put somethign together. new parts. reliable. not hacked. allprofessional.
agreed you get what you pay for... but you said "800 bucks if you go with completley new parts". Myself, I am using a DX platform w/o AC so the STI mani works perfect. And I did forget about the adapter plate. So +$60 for everyone that doesnt have a plasma cutter and a drill press (pwnage for meeeee).Project Dc2 said:i never said it was an 800 setup. its a NEW setup with QUALITY parts .
the way i see it. .. you can set it up once the right way and not have to look back and keep on changing stuff/ ZIP teing stuff backtogteher/ replacing broken parts or used turbos that blow out.
if you wanna roll thru the junkyard to piece somethign up togehter sure.
oil line 35$ ? what are you using. rubber hose ? i mean cmon who uses rubber hose and clamps these days ? i woudlnt trust 80psi of oil pressure and 300 degree oil to roll thru some regular fuel lines.
it will work. but how much do you cherish your car? and your motor ? imagine what happens if your hose cracks open. and 80 psi of hot oil flies everywhere. anyone heard of fire ?
mani 20$ .. maybe for a non AC compatible HF manifold. you forgot an adapter plate. unless you're gonna just weld the turbo to a cast manifodl whcih will crack cuz of incompatible metals.
either case. i know a lotta guys are all up on home made turbo .. but how many times do you find those guys buyin new parts or replacing their old messed up parts or replacing cracked cheap manifodls or bolts and towing their cars home.
i know helps that i work at a shop and one of my best friends owns a turbo company. thats a very good setup though.. turbo aside I know i could have saved only $125.Shiznit said:inigo my friend, you are a bastard

You can easily buy used/seized turbos and rebuild them for under a bill and be just as reliable as a new turbo.
Where do I get my stainless steel braided oil lines for $35? HA, why would I ever divulge that information? I've done my homework.
My setup, when complete, will be about 1600 including new rings, pistons, rods, valvetrain, block with filler, hone, blueprint & assembly using ARP head bolts and OEM rings. Still havent decided on my snail.. lookin for a large IHI or a kkk24
without a doubt, i agree completely.Project Dc2 said:ahh yes. my bad on sayin the 800. typo. all in all. im tired of seen " HACKED" together kits and then the mtoors blowing up or problems and peopel complaining that turbo setups are so unreliabile when in reality its the person who set it up or cut corners that made it unreliable.
Im not aiming for 400 though... I'd have to get it sleeved to hold that much power.lkailburn said:400 on vitara's? i've never seen anyone come close to that so i guess i can't say yay or nay. you should build it up and see if they hold up to 400whp lol. that would take a LOT of tuning.
tell you what, if you hit 400 on vitara's it will convince me to buy them. im sitting on the fence at the moment
GReddy kits are way over rated. WAY too much money.DreaMerSter said:or you can fly by all of the above and get the greddy kit...thinking stock boost is like 7 psi so your good with a tune...now unless its kinda high high mileage then you might wanna consider rebuilding...or maybe even forced induction pistons...well anyway...stock internals can with stand most small turbos and a good tune
yes they are overpriced and over rated but to be honest, me not knowing to much about em i'm going w/ the greddy kit for my car, because it comes w/ damn near everything minus i/c bov, the greddy kit is nice to start out w/ and maybe use to get yourself familiar w/ itInigo Montoya said:GReddy kits are way over rated. Stupid noobs.
+1 mate, you are teh mangiShiznit said:i dissagree, my first turbo kit was built while i was reading up on the subject. i wouldnt even dream about buying a turbo kit before you understand how one works. my first kit is also the one posted on this page.
