Well, here goes......
I am looking to build three 96-98 model Civic sedans for my three kids over the next 6 years. My kids range from Zac (13), Alex (12), and Mackenzie (10). I want to give them a good base to start from and have something they can have fun in, safe fun. The trim level I am looking at for the cars themselves is between the LX & EX. The sunroof is the big thing, I always wanted one in my first car, but ended up with a Geo Prism hatchback!!! So I definitely want to be able to do things differently.
My plan is to have them do the majority of the work themselves and I will be there to help them along the way. I haven't been 'on the scene' in many years and lots have changed. When I was on scene, I had a 94 Integra with a mild B18B. Not a lot of fancy stuff on it, just cold air intake, upgraded intake manifold, DC Sports exhaust manifold, DC catback exhaust, stage 3 clutch, adjustable coilovers, 16" alloy wheels, & custom painted interior.
I spent most of my energy learning my way around the B18B series engine. I never ventured out from it. Now that I have kids of my own, I want them to have something they can play with, be out with their friends, and be able to look at their car and say, "I built that" to their friends.
That said, I am in need of some guidance on choosing a good base engine platform. One that is able to withstand the abuse a 15/16 year old can put it through, yet be able to get them back and forth to church, work, dates, etc. I have the mild impression that the B16 and the B18 are very similar, is this a correct assumption? If this is the case this may be the platform to go with, since I should be able to dig through my brain and remember some of the stuff I taught myself once in there!!!
Now eventually, I would like them to be able to take that same platform and experiment on it with turbo or nitrous. I have seen before that there used to be many people taking the B16 and throwing a good sized turbo on it with 12-15 psi of boost. Same goes with the nitrous, 50-100 shot.
Once the platform has been chosen, then I will go through the entire car with each one of the kids and let them start picking items that suit their tastes, engine mods, wheels, adjustable coilovers, interiors, sound system, etc. This way they CAN SAY, 'I BUILT THAT!!!!!'
Thank you all in advance for your assistance on this matter. Like I said, I have several years to do this work with them. Hopefully I can get them to start saving for this project, instead of blowing their allowance on 'stuff'
Regards Many Thanks,
Robbie Rob
