when does vtec kick in

hey i have a 96 civic ex coupe standard transmission i was wondering when the vtec kicks in i here its at4000 rpms but im not 100 percent sure does anyone know exactly when it kicks in for that model car

mine kicks in precisely at 5700 rpm's. it varies tho, anywhere between 5k-5800 should be ok...

That is quite possibly the most non-brilliant thing you could do for a stock motor that doesn't have supporting mods or a tune. And from the sounds of it, the OP has a stock civic considering he's asking when VTEC kicks in.
