Why the H22?

Why is everyone so stuck on going with an H22 these days? It seems like everyone that asks about a swap is planning on going with the H22.

You would think that after all these threads more would realize the b18 is a much more streetable motor and is a hell of a lot cheaper.

Why the strong interest in the H22 lately? Something going on in the civic world that i'm missing, that is causing all this interest in the H22?

i been a B seris fan since the start, i loved my Type R when it was all motor and even more now that is boosted. so when looking into swapping my 98 civic the type R motors are pretty pricey for a grand less you can get a H22 with the same horsepower and more torque, its a little more difficult to install(mount kit, wireing, axles, etc) but you runnin a low 14 , high 13 right from the start. my type r was a high 13 seocnd car with bacic boltons(intake, header, exhaust, pully), but for the price difference and a little more bottom end i like what the H22 has to offer. thats my .02

i think that if i had my way, id pick a boosted gsr engine...dunno bout the h22 though, maybe the whole idea of it gets people. "a 2.2 Litre prelude engine in a civic" sounds nice...i dunno

not sure i'm thinking its the whole big motor in a lil car idea. I rather have another motor built and not mess with handling. Who knows also with anything group things become trendy nothings wrong with that its just teh fad now like LSVTEC was last year.

they do that cus they think its cheap. hmo has h22a full swaps for like 2200 bucks or less, so about what a b16a goes for. they think hmmm 2.2 is better than 1.6 and 200 hp is better than 170, h22a must be better. none of them realize the work it takes to put it in, and as of yet, none of the n00bs who've asked about it has actually done it.

as i noob myself I can tell you why I wanted to go for the H22, purely because like you said i thougth "Wow, a 2.2ltr 200bhp VTEC in a civic hatchback will destroy anything on the road."

But after research I realised that the cost of buying and installin a H22a works out about the same as buying a B18c1 as you have to buy mounts, and power steering pump etc.

Also, the B18c1 has better prospects in terms of turboing etc. So after alot of research I have come to your way of thinking and find the B18c1 swap a much better swap than the H22a.

im a noob and i've done it for 3 customers already.i belived all the rumors about how the handleing was bad from the weight and how had it is to fit in but after doing a few of them the handleing isnt bad and the first one took a little time to do, but then they get quicker to get done, like any other swap. i'd only want one to leave all motor and it would make for a nice daily driver with power for errr on ramps and such. if im gonna have a full out race motor its b series all the way forme.

it is a good engine no less, but like before, i think people are gettin the metality of having a big engine in a small car so people can talk s**t like "1.6L blahblah bullshit" na-mean?

as far as i know, people swap the H22 into accords and get more go that way, because he accord engine is boo boo, (cept for the newest ones, the V6, yeah that thing hauls)

I'm sure alot of the people who go for the H22 are rich and want the added hp from the displacement. Myself, I'd go with a B16A or a B18C1 and boost it ... but I don't have that kind of money to spare ...

K, im not exactly rich, i wanted a challange, and yah id consider myself a noobie, i did not do my swap, but i helped my friend with it, he did it all for 200$ and a case of beer so i got lucky there. i went for it because like i juss said, Challange. everyone said oh its such a hard swap, and it cost soo much money, i think my rents bought my car for a grad gift, so i didnt have to pay for that, but all together it cost me a meer 3400 to get everything dun with enjo mounts, custom made axles, b4 supention upgrades and brake upgrades that is, after the swap i saved up for them, the car did not handle good @ all after the swap, but once i got them new springs and s**t, it was alll good, then braking was f**king horid, so i gots me some bigger brakes, right now the car is running fine, when i get the pics from my friend who did the swap, ill post em up on the site, wont be soon tho, because he has sent em to his dad to show him, and i never asked him untill after he sent em, so yah thats my h22 story, the car is good now tho!

I wanted one for the torque. The 2.2 is a torque monster when compared to a 1.8. But in the end I just decided to stick with a b18 and boost it. A lot easier in the long run, and less hassle. Im not going to say the h22 is a bad swap. it's a great swap if you've got the means to do it, but for me the b18 was the better swap.

ImportFan, I'd go with a b18c1, as it can handle as much boost, plus has Vtec, and trust me, you'll love vtec =)

Well lets put it this way:

if you read any of the import mags, you'll find that they dont use b18b1s for turbo motors. Every single high boost turbo motor I have scene has been a vtec engine. By high boost I mean upwards of 20psi. In fact I was just reading an article today about a b18c1 that they got 656hp out of with 25lbs of boost. That's pretty serious.

Yes and no. You see there are different kinds of b18. Here are all of them:

B18A1- USDM 1.8L DOHC non-VTEC- 90-93 Integra RS/LS/(90-91: 130hp / 92-93: 140hp)

B18B1- USDM 1.8L DOHC non-VTEC- 94-01 Integra RS/LS/GS (140hp)

B18C- JDM 1.8L DOHC VTEC- 94+ Integra SiR-G (180ps)

B18C1- USDM 1.8L DOHC VTEC- 94+ Integra GS-R (170hp) *The JDM version has 180hp*

B18C5- USDM 1.8L DOHC VTEC- 97+ Integra Type R- (195hp)

B18C6/7- JDM 1.8L DOHC VTEC- 96+ Integra Type R- (200ps)

So you see the b18b's are non vtec, and the b18c's are vtec. I would never consider buying a USDM engine, so personally when I think of a b18c1 or a b18c5 I instantly assume the JDM version, even though to be correct it should be refered to as a b18c6/7
