need CS2 or newer to work with RAW in Photoshop.

Fastone Imageviewer is free and will allow some work in RAW.

the unedited raw had more detail in it (less blown out). i lost the original but compared to the unedited jpg the unedited raw had more detail in my dogs furr, like it wasnt as over exposed so i was able to achieve a better effect.

Hahahaha, that was funny... I see the difference Coutts, whether edited or not, everything is just more defined from what I have seen. i am interested in this hack you used coutts, anymore info on it?

lightroom is morely for photo correction and stuff, photoshop is when you want to do more post processing, visual effects, etc.

PS can do everything Lightroom can.
Lightroom is only for Photography.
PS is a pixel editor, which will alloy you to do more.
Lightroom you can organize, edit, share/print all in a fast work flow

The Pro's about Lightroom is...
Quicker workflow, and it has a nice user friendly interface

Where in Photoshop,
I use Bridge to manage my images, Camera Raw to do my conversion, Photoshop for my Edit. Save then upload.

Its all about what you want and need. I personally use Photoshop CS3, but i really want to try Lightroom.

Back on subject.

The benefits of Raw is the extra Detail. which helps with Exposure and White balance.
But if you get it correct on the camera, you really don't need Raw.
Unless you want the extra info for picture manipulation

I shot raw because i also leave my White balance on Auto, and the camera is not always correct.

I use a few different programs for RAW depending on what I need:

Canon File Viewer Utility: Extracts embedded JPG from RAW file
Photoshop CS3: For exposure adjustment, graphics, and resizing images
Raw Shooter Essentials: For simple RAW adjustments, has nice layout and easy navigation
