BOV. Necessary or no?

I'm running a turbonetics t3/t04e 0.48 a/r on 5 pounds. LsVtec. I'm aware that the bov is supposed to protect the turbo, but I'm not sure how? I'm not even sure 5 pounds is enough to do any damage. I do HAVE a bov to put on.. just wondering if I NEED it or not.

Clear, fully supported opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

basicly the air is being pushed in the engine and then when you let off the throttle and the throttle plate closes it has no where to go but back to the turbo. That air will try and push the compresser wheel backwards. 5 lbs is next to nothing but none the less its not good on the turbo. i would throw it on there because your probly gonna realize how worthless 5lbs is and your gonna wanna push more boost.

Ah. Well when I get a chance I'll have to track down a aluminum greddy flange and have it tigged on I guess. Just wasnt sure if it was worth the trouble.. only 5 pounds on a small turbo and all.

Just get one of those BOV tubes with the flange from Ebay and use silicone couplers to plumb it in. Same thing, no TIG'ing involved.

You can find the old gen mitsu bypass valves everywhere. They are quite cheap and work great with lower boost pressures.

not only hurts power, but will deff hurt the turbo!!

Ive seen someone one who's ran a 7psi wastegated turbo, and actually blew his turbo to s**t, b/c it spiked to 25psi b/c he didnt have a BOV.

good way to explain it. but anyways you should always have one. and if you hear a odd noise after your turbo is done spooling up and when its spoiling down and sounds like a chatter or somehitng hard to explain, thats the sound of your turbo being destroyed bc u didint get a BOV.

And it also allows your engine to drop revs faster, and helps to dissipate heat from the turbo.

I'm pretty sure they have some sort of BOV or Diverter Valve.

Evo's and Sti's come with bypass valves stock.

I can't think of a single factory turbo car that doesn't come with a bypass valve.
