Picking up one of these beauties tomorrow:

$170, picked up (but going to try and talk him down). Comes with front and rear caps, 52mm UV, HB-37 hood, and a hard case.

For the cost that the Canon flashes are, I would rather start to invest in alienbee's b400's since they are pretty close to that sort of price range. He'd be fine with a couple Vivitar 285hv's. They have the zoom head, adjustable power, good for the money.

lol have the same shirt... anyways do you just set the 285's to a certain power and put an umbrella in front for the band shots and hoope for the best or do a ton of practice shots to get exposure right haha. or is it something i am totally missing. i have to go through strobist again and some lighting websites.

^^^

How long does it take you to go through 400 shots...and how many keepers did you end up with?

89SiGuy - Depending on your locations and weather, after you start shooting for a bit and get used to your equipment, you'll be able to guess what settings you're going to be using. For that shot, since the light was bounced off of a white umbrella..its not as efficient as a silver umbrella, so that told me that I was going to need more light. So, since the vivitar was already set on the highest power and I didn't want to up the ISO, I adjusted the f/stop down a couple stops from f/7.1 to f/4.5...or whatever final settings i used. But, when using the 50 mm and I was starting to get into the sub f/3.5 range and I didn't want that short of a focal lenght, i had to up the iso to 200 so that I could should with an f/stop of f/7.1

Coutts - Remember, I was shooting with the kit 18-55mm lens for a whole year.

well i took 400, and my sister took 150 (we partnered up in our photog business)...so we spent the better part of sunday sifting through photo's, and post-processing as we went....i'd say we spent about 4 hours total (once we got in the groove, it sped up a bit)

ended up w/ 101 shots for the client to choose from on our smugmug page

i bought myself a nikon sb600 (im not sure, might be the nikon equivalent of the canon 430ex?) anyways, i bought the sb600 after having the camera for close to a year (maybe more, actually) and have been learning as much as i can with that....

you can actually accomplish alot with just one light ( www.onelightworkshop.com )

but i DO plan on upgrading before too long here ;)

Maybe i'm just slow or my ADHD kicked in mad early, it took me a good 10 hours to edit 163 photos in light room, then, some in photoshop to correct anything.
Pete, are you refering to the aperture?
Yep

I'm so pumped for today's shoot.

Coutts - the only thing bad about on camera flash, is that its direct on. If you could make some sort of ring flash, that'd be better than the onboard flash.

well can't you get those plastic diffusers that clip on the end of an external camera flash? wouldn't that help?

well, your editing is also WAAY more intense than mine....your adding some drastic appearances to your photo's, while im keeping mine fairly simple due to the fact that they are family portraits that will probbly end up being printed out to pass out to gramma's etc

mine mostly consisted of double checking the levels...slight curve adjustments, and minor cloning (and RARELY did some color variation)...so it didnt take all that long

You guys have any tips for taking indoor shots w/low light while keeping the shutter fast enough to not blur? I've been finding it challenging to conquer this.

get a lens w/ a low f-stop (50mm 1.8 is good for indoors)...tripod wouldnt hurt either...

My lens is:
F-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR

so that's not very capable of doing well indoors?
