With all the blood tests Floyd Mayweather Jr. is demanding from Manny Pacquiao, you’d think the cocky American is planning to have pre-marital sex with the Filipino instead of trading blows with him inside a boxing ring.

Mayweather, whose father Floyd Sr. has accused Pacquiao of taking banned substances, claims he just wants to make sure that the Filipino will come “clean.” So what do you want Floyd? A blood test to determine if PacMan is also HIV-positive?

Just about every detail on the March 13, 2010 mega bout has been ironed out. The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas has been picked as the official venue, notwithstanding an unprecedented $25 million offer from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the fight to be staged in the new football stadium of the Cowboys.

Negotiations, however, hit an iceberg when Mayweather demanded Olympic-style drug testing. Compared to the drug tests performed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the Olympic-style is far more rigid. Mayweather’s camp wants blood drawn from Pacquiao’s veins within 30 days of the fight.

Pacquiao is not exactly opposed to the idea. What the Filipino does not like is the proximity of the blood test to the fight date. The PacMan is willing to have his veins pricked, but not at a date that is so close to the fight as it can weaken him.

Mayweather argues that Pacquiao should readily consent, considering that other great athletes like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James had undergone the same Olympic-style procedure.

Mayweather is speaking with a forked tongue.

It should be emphasized that it was Mayweather’s camp who wanted the fight in Las Vegas. Pro fights in Las Vegas are held under the supervision of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). By agreeing to trade mitts in Las Vegas, Mayweather and Pacquiao have placed themselves under the jurisdiction of the commission. The 12-round bout is a professional boxing contest and not an amateur event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee.

The NSAC has its own drug-testing procedure, which has been observed by all fighters who display their wares in the Desert City. The drug procedure of the NSAC is far from being the routine, almost inept, drug test a Filipino driver goes through while trying to secure a driver’s license at the Land Transportation Office. Last year, the NSAC even issued a memorandum detailing new drug-testing procedures—procedures that were aimed at flushing out users of performance-enhancing drugs. The procedure includes random testing to be done year-round, regardless of whether or not the fighter is scheduled for an upcoming event. A missed test is treated as a failed test.

The NSAC procedure, however, involves only urine tests before and after the fight. The Olympic-style involves random blood and urine testing. The fact that NSAC only requires urine, however, does not mean that its procedure is flawed.

Mayweather’s demand for Olympic-style drug testing thus amounts to a slap on the faces of the commissioners of the NSAC.

Mayweather was not lying when he said that basketball stars Bryant and James had undergone the same Olympic procedure. But here’s the rub: Bryant and James underwent the procedure as Olympic athletes. The two hoop stars suited up for Team USA in last year’s Olympic Games.

Last we checked, Pacquiao and Mayweather are fighting for the World Boxing Organization welterweight title and for millions of dollars. No Olympic gold medal is at stake.

As things stand, the big fight has been placed back in the shelf. From where this writer sits, Mayweather and Pacquiao will come to their senses and return to the negotiating table.

It would appear that Mayweather is already playing mind games with Pacquiao. Back in 1989, when Thomas Hearns fought Sugar Ray Leonard in a rematch, the “Hitman” also tried the same tactic by accusing Leonard of taking steroids before his 1987 upset of Marvin Hagler.

Pacquiao is not one to be easily rattled. In a sharp counter, he is reportedly demanding a fine of $10 million for every pound Mayweather will gain in excess of the agreed weight limit of 147 pounds.
Mayweather failed to make the stipulated 144-pound limit when he fought Juan Manuel Marquez in September.

Not since the famous blood compact between Legazpi and Sikatuna has blood been a major issue between two foreign gladiators. In any event, Mayweather-Pacquiao is too big a fight to just evaporate into thin air. It will happen. It has to happen.

Las Vegas: Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao fight: Pacquiao Vs Mayweather fight will not be canceled. Given that how quickly other bottlenecks were cleared away by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, their super fight set for March 13 is unlikely to be dropped.

Mayweather is reportedly willing to give up his demand for Olympic-style random blood test which Pacquiao has been opposing on the grounds of his apprehensions about the impact of the tests on his performance.

Mayweather’s U-turn may or may not have something to do with Pacquiao’s defamation suit against him that demanded $75,000 in damages. Mayweather, his father, uncle, Richard Sheafer, Oscar De La Hoya were sued for falsely accusing Pacquiao of using steroids.

Richard Shaefer, CEO of the Golden Boy Promotions that promotes Mayweather had told ESPN that they were mulling over withdrawing their demand for random drug test.

Earlier Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum had suggested postponing the fight while Pacquiao himself said he would fight second-tier fighter Paulie Malignaggi if Mayweather backed out. His trainer Freddie Roach named the new light middleweight holder Yuri Foreman as another alternative.

Contrary to the earlier rumors, the much-hyped bout is more likely than not to be fought at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 13.

WHAT!?, boxing doesn't have nearly HALF the drama UFC has! Maybe mayweather is a f**king attention whore but that's about it. WEC is better that UFC just because they cut out all the bullshit and you don't have fags like dana white trying to be in every shot.

OFFICIAL DEATH OF THE PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER FIGHT AT HAND
by Lance Pugmire, Los Angeles Times, January 10, 2010
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sides are no longer talking, last-minute attempts to strike a compromise appear to be futile, and Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, says he's three hours away from finalizing a site deal with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to stage an alternative Pacquiao fight at the team's stadium on March 13.

"If Bob's so strongly moving to the other fight, then we have no choice but to move on," Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s promoter Richard Schaefer told The Times this morning. "They didn't want the fight."

Mayweather and Pacquiao failed to strike a deal because of their dispute over blood testing for performance-enhancing drugs. Pacquiao, who has sued Mayweather for alleged defamation because of public statements made implying the Filipino star has used those drugs, won't accept a blood test closer than 24 days before the fight. Mayweather wants the fighters to be subject to blood tests up to 14 days before the fight. A Pacquiao advisor said the fighter himself has rejected the 14-day proposal.

Arum flatly said today that "the horse has left the building," in reference to a Mayweather fight, and instead was enthused to discuss his plans for Pacquiao's March 13 fight against welterweight contender Joshua Clottey. Clottey lost a decision last year to Miguel Cotto, who later lost to Pacquiao by 12th-round TKO in November.

"This place [Cowboys Stadium] is absolutely sensational; the boxing fans will love it," Arum said. "I can't even properly describe it without sounding crazy."

Arum attended Saturday night's Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game in Jones' private suite, a gathering that placed the liberal promoter in the same box as former President George W. Bush and conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.

"They both love Pacquiao, and [Bush] said he'll come to the fight if his schedule allows," Arum said.

Arum said Pacquiao will earn a minimum $10 million for the Clottey bout, with seating capacity being placed at 50,000.

Meanwhile, the Mayweather camp is considering its options for March 13 and beyond.

Take a fight at MGM Grand against someone liker Paulie Malignaggi? Wait until a later date, like May 1, and fight longtime rival Shane Mosley if he defeats Andre Berto on Jan. 30?

Schaefer said Mayweather is willing to fight Mosley, a pairing that will conclude years of jawing between the two gifted foes that have long been near the top of the world's top pound-for-pound lists. Mosley is currently a world welterweight champion.

"At 147 pounds, the man to beat is 'Sugar' Shane Mosley," Schaefer said. "Floyd will take that fight, and will shut up all those who are saying he's a coward."
