Not to mention.... nations like Chile and Haiti might have higher building standards... if builders had the resources to afford higher quality materials. Hell, we have a building (I think it's an air force base?) that is built on top of a suspension, similar to automobile suspension. It's made that way so that an earthquake can't touch it.

Maybe that should be our new building code for all our buildings. Why don't we do that? It's not cost effective. We don't have the money to be doing s**t like that.
This is in NORAD. 1300 seismic shock absorbers that was built for a nuclear blast.

Total population for Anchorage in 2008 was only 279,000.
Total population for Anchorage in 1960 was only 44,000.
Total population for Chile in 2002 Census was 15,116,000, estimate population for 2010 is 17,031,873.

That's why more people were killed in Chile than in Anchorage.

It's your blatant ignorance that causes Americans to have the bad image they do.
Also, this Earthquake was in 1964, not 1967. It wasn't 15 people, it was 128 people.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=9.2+Earthquake+in+Alaska&l=1

So with these new numbers, if the 9.2 Earthquake hit Anchorage today, the death toll would top 800 people.

(In case your math fails you. Divide 279243 by 44237, which comes to 6.31, multiply this by 128.)

If we use the 1964 quake as an example, and use Chile's total population for Anchorage, it would come to over 49,000 people would be dead.

(Again, in case your math fails you, divide 17031873 by 44237, which comes to 385.01, multiply this by 128.)

first, have you been to a 3rd world country before? have you seen the conditions of the buildings they use daily? have you seen the lack of engineering that goes into their every day life? like i said before, if they didnt build houses out of sticks and zipties, he damage wouldnt have been so drastic.

second, the earthquake i was talking about WAS in 1964. It occured at 5:36PM (local) on March 27th. It was a 9.2, killed 15 people. Thats right the actual earthquake killed 15 people. The tsunami that followed killed 113 bringing the total to 128 deaths (113+15=128 if you cant do math ;) )

compairing what goes on at Cheyenne Mountain to your average house/building is stupid.

Oh ya, NORAD is an organization, not a place ;)

I've been to Haiti, and I've been to Costa Rica. I know what these countries look like, and I know that they're trying everything they can to make a buck. Construction materials are in the back of their minds, way behind feeding their family and living in a house to begin with.

you can't really compare Chile to Haiti... Chile has a building code, Haiti does not. In Haiti, house are built from whatever you can find, Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. I would not consider Chile to be a 3rd world country, Haiti? absolutely, maybe even 5th or 6th world :???:

On the whole donating money thing....ehh... don't get me started. I believe charity starts at home, and right now home is a pretty f**ked up place.

And all I wanted to do with this thread was find out if Anfrey's family in Chile was safe... I guess I'll PM next time

9.2 in '67 only killed 15 people in Anchorage, AK
If there is any possible way to make yourself sound more stupid and ignorant, I would be astonished...you sir, are one dumb mother f**ker.

While I agree, America has its own problems to deal with and not worry as much about others, but....just nevermind, you aren't even smart enough for me to continue.

I wouldn't consider Chile a third world country. They may not make as much money as WE do, but they aren't poor in their own standards. Your comparing our system to their system, two completely different systems.

second, the earthquake i was talking about WAS in 1964. It occured at 5:36PM (local) on March 27th. It was a 9.2, killed 15 people. Thats right the actual earthquake killed 15 people. The tsunami that followed killed 113 bringing the total to 128 deaths (113+15=128 if you cant do math ;) )
And where did most of the people that died from the Tsunami come from? Alaska. To, they too were part of the death of the Earthquake. I'm also sure that not all 700 people who have died in Chile have died from building collapsing on them, I'm sure more than you think have died from natural disasters caused by the Earthquake.

compairing what goes on at Cheyenne Mountain to your average house/building is stupid.
He wasn't comparing us to them, he was suggesting we use some of the techniques that they used building it.

Good job Captain Obvious. Do you have any other well thought out and completely relevant information to share? Maybe make up some dates again?
Most people consider NORAD a place. You say NORAD, most people know where that is, you say Cheyenne Mountain, most of the people wouldn't even point it out.

Rioting and stealing will happen everywhere. It happened at New Orleans, it'll happen at any major catastrophe, because you'll a small group (sometimes larger sized) taking advantage of the situation to steal things that aren't needed for survival.

Chile is working with Supermarkets around the country to give food and supplies to people who need it, and from what I've read, not much rioting or stealing has been happening. I have read that some people are breaking in and stealing electronics and appliances, but most are taking food and supplies from Supermarkets.

you smell....... nice

seriously though... I know phone lines and internet were all down. I'm not sure if Anf has even been able to contact any of his relatives in Chile. If anyone has Anf's email and wants to just PM it to me I would appreciate it. I'm sure he's crazy busy trying to find out whatever he can and CC is the last thing on his mind.

I've been talking to him on BBM, no definite word yet. If I find out anything relevant I'll post it.

EDIT- His parents and Cousin are OK. Their houses not so much.

I'll post what I know from what little I've from him. His parents are ok, he's talked to a couple of friends but hasn't heard from a couple. Powers out, but internet is up, so it's like a Lose Win situation.

I'm just glad his family and from what we know, friends are ok. :thumbs up

they're all safe and that's what matters. Houses get re-built in time, people, not so much.
