I walk back inside my house and let it warm up, live out in the country in the middle of nowhere so I think its fine.

 is it really illegal?
I believe it is. I can't find the code under quick searching, but I remember them talking about it on the news some years ago. It had something to do with trying to deter people from doing it because of all the vehicle theft. There are apparently thieves that go around in the mornings looking for cars running unattended. Makes sense if you think like a dirty thief. Would you want to go sneak around at night and have to hot wire cars in the dark or would you like to do it when they are handed to you on a platter with keys and all? Again, I'm not condoning, just saying.

It could be based on county though.

I used to start up my old K5 Blazer in the morning and let it run for a bit, but that was on almost 3 acres and it was behind the house with the gate locked. It was old and VERY cold blooded. My Civic isn't so there is NO need.

If it's super cold out (40 or below) I jump in, start it, shiver like a mother for a few seconds, then I throw the e-brake, an start moving while I pray for heat.

I do 1 of 2 things.

Uno: If I remember: I use my car starter since I don't have a clutch safety switch (auto-manual conversion FTW). However lately my ebrake gets stuck on, so I leave it in gear, meaning I can't do this.. Which leaves me option 2..

Dos: Walk out to my car, key to ON (II) to prime the fuel pump for a few seconds, turn the car on, and usually just wait about 20-30 seconds or so for the wideband to calibrate and give me the initial reading. From there I drive away, but I'm easy on it until it warms up.

Like said, I start my car about 10 minutes before I leave... That way the car is warm and toasty when I get in it =)

10 minutes is too long, really unless you're living in -30 degrees Celsius weather. You're just wasting fuel and wearing your cat faster.

Are you stuck in the 50s or something?? I would never let my car idle for more than 3 minutes, thats just stupid.

I turn it on, put on my seat belt, set my station, adjust my seat then go.
I'm brushing my teeth and making my lunch for the day while it's warming up. Sue me...I like to multi-task, save money and eat healthier, AND have good hygiene.

I have a remote start so they can't take my car regardless.

Oh and I dunno about you guys, but I know my car DEFINITELY drives MUCH smoother after I let it warm up. I think the 1 time I took off after starting it, it ran like s**t. I'll stick to my old fashioned ways and let her warm up.

I start up my car, walk back inside, iron my clothes for work, take a nice hot shower, have bread and tea, watch some morning cartoons, and when my car is warmed up... That's when I jump in and drive off.
