so what i have learned from all you subie guys is that buying any subi used with "higher" milage is a mistake? i am tempted to get one of the following subies: rs2.5, a wrx bug eye or the peanut eye, sti peanut eye, or maybe a legacy 05 up, all share motors for the most part right? and all those motors share a common trans outside of the sti right? thanks tonee and low not slow(what is your name?)

The 2005-up Legacy GT have RA gears AKA stronger tranny.

The problem with high mileage subies is that you don't know how they've been maintained and these cars don't like to be neglected.

The STI was always a 2.5l engine, the bugeye is a 2.0. Beyond that the turbos change each generation roughly.

Honestly... There is NO problem with purchasing high mileage Subarus... People often say things like oh motors blow, trannys break, etc etc... But what these unknowledgable fools don't know is that a Subaru motor is just like any other motor out there.

Tom, if you're really serious about looking for a used Subaru, here's a few things off the top of my head to look for:

- CARFAX
- Look at the past history of the maintenance kept on the car(s)
- Look at the MAJOR serviced interval maintenance (30k, 60k, 90k) kept on the car(s)
- How many previous owners the car has been through
- The average age that the previous owners has been
- The previous modifications done to the vehicle(s)
- And most importantly, check out the SOUND, and major components (turbos) of the vehicle(s)

Also, check out these GREAT and HELPFUL links that'll make your Subaru shopping a lot easier:

Mine had all the major service intervals at dealerships. 2 previous owners and 65k miles. Turbo had zero play. Spun a bearing 6 weeks later. Mine is hardly a rare story, in fact the mileage is generally right in the same ballpark, 60-75k miles.

Car was healthy as a horse when I bought it, I even took it to a dyno to make sure things checked out and it laid down excellent numbers.

It had been modified but then returned to stock and traded in. When I went to get it tuned we discovered remnants of a past tune in the car, which isn't something you could easily find before you buy the car. The only other evidence if tom foolery were aftermarket endlinks in the front.

Trannys break because people drive like retards. Engines blow because people are bad about getting their oil changed at the right intervals, which is 3750 for a turbo Subaru per the manufacturer. It's not a Honda with 5k mile intervals and will forgive you for forgetting and going 8k miles a few times. Turbos add complexity and maintenance and people aren't accustomed to that.

My car has nearly 83k miles, it has been heavily nodded for the past 40k miles... I used to take it to the strip, been through a few road races and autox, and get ragged on ever so often... I've never had any problems like this and I'm on stock block and tranny.

I guess its driver error with the people having s**t broken all the time. The worse thing that's ever happened to me was a cracked radiator tank, and has since upgraded to koyo and no problems ever since.
