Is the safety rating a factor for your search? If you have priorities, make a list. This will help limit the possibilities.

For example, from what you've mentioned so far, here are your criteria:

1) $5000 or less
2) Accommodates three car seats
3) Good gas mileage
4) Good safety rating

Are there others?
thats about it a little flexible on price. really am considering a 99-01 b20z crv with a 5 speed really love honda since there easy to work on and are reliable plus ive worked on more hondas than anything else so they are right up my alley

Actually that was going to be my second suggestion. Slap on a b16 head and a vtec ecu and you'll have a lot of fun with a CRV.

Does it have to be a sedan? Or are you open to SUVs and trucks too? I was going to say a toyota tacoma crew cab :thumbs up
not really wanting a truck and some suv's are acceptable i just dont want to get 15mpg again been there done that and its not fun for a dd.

you look into older 4runners? my parents just bought a 96 4 cylinder with a 5 speed and it gets around 22ish miles per gallon, and for a 4 banger it hauls pretty good

i think a crv with a gsr head a couple bolt ons and interior work would be perfect and still good on gas while having room for the kiddos

I agree. I was in the market for an electron blue CRV SE but couldnt ever find one under like $7k. The intent was CRVTEC with bolt-ons, potentially boost down the road, nice set of wheels and some suspension upgrades

lol yeah but finding a good one is like finding a needle in a haystack. they are always either run down or hacked up
There out there though, just depends what your timeline is. Good luck with whatever you get man.

Stay away from older VW's. They have tons of electrical problems. You can thank me later.

I say a small SUV like the CRV would be perfect.
