About a month ago I started having a problem starting the car. I turn the key and the starter just keeps cranking but the engine won't start. Sometimes when I would let off the key and the key would come back, the engine would catch and if I gave it a little gas it would slowly fire up. Once the engine block is warm the car starts fine until the car sits again for 4-5 hours.
One day when having problems starting the car, my Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on. I had my step father hook up his computer to the car and it showed a Cylinder 2 misfire.
The battery in the car is fine, I had it tested at Autozone.
The starter is cranking strong according to my step-father.
All the plugs, wires, and cap/rotor were replaced earlier this summer.
After consulting with some various mechanics where my step-father works they said it was the Ignition Switch. Today we replaced the ignition switch, and the car is still having issues. It is completely baffling my step-father, who has been working on cars all his life.
Now I also have a new problem to throw into the mix.....driving down the highway the last few days, as I'm accelerating, my tachometer will start jumping up and down like crazy! I seriously watched it go from 1500 down to almost zero and back up faster than you could blink your eye! It was like watching the needle on a trampoline! The car was lunging when it was doing this as well. This occurs only when the engine is still pretty cold, but once I have been driving awhile I don't experience anymore problems. Based on all the problems I am having, where should I go from here? I really don't want to drop the money taking it to a shop if it's something we could fix ourselves, especially since my step-father gets deep discounts on auto parts. Thanks everyone!
