97 Civic strange starting problems....everyone is stumped!

1997 Civic EX 2 Dr.
About a month ago I started having a problem starting the car. I turn the key and the starter just keeps cranking but the engine won't start. Sometimes when I would let off the key and the key would come back, the engine would catch and if I gave it a little gas it would slowly fire up. Once the engine block is warm the car starts fine until the car sits again for 4-5 hours.
One day when having problems starting the car, my Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on. I had my step father hook up his computer to the car and it showed a Cylinder 2 misfire.
The battery in the car is fine, I had it tested at Autozone.
The starter is cranking strong according to my step-father.
All the plugs, wires, and cap/rotor were replaced earlier this summer.
After consulting with some various mechanics where my step-father works they said it was the Ignition Switch. Today we replaced the ignition switch, and the car is still having issues. It is completely baffling my step-father, who has been working on cars all his life.
Now I also have a new problem to throw into the mix.....driving down the highway the last few days, as I'm accelerating, my tachometer will start jumping up and down like crazy! I seriously watched it go from 1500 down to almost zero and back up faster than you could blink your eye! It was like watching the needle on a trampoline! The car was lunging when it was doing this as well. This occurs only when the engine is still pretty cold, but once I have been driving awhile I don't experience anymore problems. Based on all the problems I am having, where should I go from here? I really don't want to drop the money taking it to a shop if it's something we could fix ourselves, especially since my step-father gets deep discounts on auto parts. Thanks everyone!

Sounds to me like a timing issue. I would check timing on your distributor, and make sure you're TDC (top dead center) on your cam. As far as your tach, that's electrical. That is going to suck, bad. It could be a short in the tach itself, it could be a short in the wiring harness. I would let someone with experience look at that.

^^^ This..

Verify timing, clean and/or replace main relay, check your spark plug in #2 (dirty plugs can cause misfire. Check gap as well). I believe the tach signal is a product of your dizzy (least it is on the b16a2) so start there and work your way back. Clean your grounds and power connections. Check all fuses... (basic stuff i'm sure you've already looked at)

Thanks for the replies. I will try those suggestions, even though I have never checked timing myself before. I am not very handy with cars personally.

Pull #1 plug out (nearest the cam pulley). Sick something long inside the spark plug hole (I use the same ratchet extension I just used to remove the spark plug). Now rotate the crank pulley counterclockwise until your extension is as far up as it will go (TDC. Top dead center). Now just verify your timing marks on the cam pulley are correct (specific to your motor. Google timing marks with your motor and you'll see plenty of example pictures). Obviously the timing cover will need to be removed to do this.

Before you go that far though, be sure you're getting fuel and what not. The main relay is an easy fix and the culprit to a lot of failed starts... Not that checking timing isn't easy, it's just more of a hassle moving things out of the way to get the bolts out of the timing covers.

Driver side, right near where your hood pop lever is next to your shin when you sit down. It's a box the size of an.... asprin bottle box?... LOL Has 8 heavy gauge wires going into it. It should have a single bolt holding it in. Pull it free, take the cover off, check that all the solder joints are good and spray the whole thing down with contact cleaner. Or replace it if you don't care to spend the money. They seem to last a long time if you just keep them clean and retouch the solder spots on them. Google it for many clear pictures. "Honda main relay".
