a d16y7 should be a obd2a but dont take my word for it . i would throw a scanner in and see what you get

no, which obd2 you are is determined by model year, unless you swap in a different engine harness

99/00 are obd2b.

ok so i have an obd2b since its the original motor
motor is irrelevant. the only difference really is the three plugs that go into the ecu at the end of the engine harness.

but yes you are obd2b

This is your correct answer. 96-98 are OBD2a, 99-00 are OBD2b.

Make sure you know what you're getting into because you may not be able to pass emissions if you go to OBD1.

i no EJ i live in oklahoma and dont have any emission laws, now if i was to say move to cali, is there a way to pass it with an obd1 motor?? or would i have to go through the process of swapping the obd1 motor out for an obd2a or obd2b?

I don't know about California specifically but where I live (and I believe most places) you wouldn't have to swap the motor out, but you'd have to swap ECUs and then deal with whatever CELs come up individually by wiring some type of workaround. I know it's possible but it's not an easy task IMO. I have a 97 with an OBD1 D15 in it that I got for free as a temporary solution. It won't pass emissions.

It's an easy swap but you still need to get motor mounts, axles, ecu, shift linkage, etc.

please note! the 99-00 hx uses a obd2A harness. IDK why but I found out the hard way when using a p28 for my single turbo and bought a obd2B -> obd1 conversion harness
