go down in full gear and unless you slide into something hard you'll probably be able to get up with all your skin still attached and not be a bloody mess on the road.
if you want to know what gear you need then ask yourserlf "what pieces of your body do you want to keep?"
You are preaching to the choir, man. I never went out without full gear. I didn't wear my full leathers unless going to the mountain roads or a long freeway run, but around town I had at the least helmet, gloves, boots, leather Icon or alpinestarz jacket, and kevlar lined riding jeans.
Lowsided at the track when I was 22. I remember touching my knee and then seconds later, sliding. At one point while sliding, I thought it was over so I set my hand down and pushed off as you do when you go to stand up...I wasn't done sliding.
I ended up fracturing my wrist and had a sore neck. Was lucky that was all of the damage. My helmet was scratched on the left and the leathers were rashed. I couldn't even imagine if it would have happened without gear. That is when I vowed to never ride on the street without gear as well. You just never know when or what is going to happen and it is better safe than sorry.
Today went to work, now at home surfing cc and the net. Turn and burn to do it all over again tomorrow....
