i was suggesting something with cheaper insurance since super sport bikes have added costs.

do you think he would be slower on a bike with less hp? i would guess he would be about the same, maybe even a little faster since he would be able to keep the bike in it's happy rev range.

the point i was trying to make is that super sport bikes have a lot of potential and unless you're going to a safe track environment you'll never begin to touch it on the streets. unless you're doing something stupid which will probably end with the bike in an insurance salvage yard and you in the hospital.

you should still ride the new ninja 300 if you get a chance to. it's a nice bike.
The insurance makes sense. But what justifies a bike as a "super sport"? And if I've been comfortable on 600s why else would I downgrade to less?

I need a bike I can kill myself on. If I'm not scared to ride it then it isn't worth it to me. But that's how I've always been with bikes and other recreational vehicles my whole life.
That is TERRIBLE reasoning.

any bike can do that. because chances are someone driving while playing on their smartphone is going to kill you. you should get a bicycle, so when it happens you'll have time to be scared instead of just being dead instantly.

you should chance your reasoning for getting a bike. lots of riders your age end up making the motorcycle community look bad because you're riding for stupid reasons and doing stupid things on them.
^^this.

I want to ride a bike for the freedom, and just cruising around with friends, but I want the opportunity there for me to push it and bring it to a track or have fun on the many winding back roads around here and beat my friends while I'm at it. When it comes to stuff like that I have to have the most power and lightest thing. Its how I've always been. Racing snowmobiles all my life etc...

I will never be spirited with a passenger in my car or on my snowmobile etc...and I will never be spirited on a public road unless I know its empty. I've lost friends having them do that. But still. I wanna go fast. Im an adrenaline junky. I love skydiving etc...
Was suppose to be an edit of my post above. Too much to fix from phone.

i justify bikes that are usually 600-1000cc bikes with clip-ons. they are very nearly race bikes that are legal to ride on the street.

i wouldn't think of it as downgrade to go to a smaller sport bike. it's just that smaller bikes or even some other bikes that are tuned for a wider power band are more usable on the streets. i tend to enjoy vehicles that i can really use than ones you have to take it ez and avoid what the bikes purpose is. i'd rather drive an original mini around town than a skyline for the same reason.

just ride a ninja 300 if you get a chance. you'll get whatever bike you want to get but it's a nice ride just to add to the bike's you've ridden.

I wouldn't mind trying one out. But I also like the looks on R6s and Cbr600s better than 300s and under.
And I see what you're saying about the smaller bikes being more "street appropiate". That makes total sense. But I wouldn't mind having a bike that had a little extra. And hell, maybe one day I'll try it out on the track (I doubt that will happen, but man that would be amazing).

alex i hope you've picked up some good gear for riding and aren't just spending your budget on the bike.

also the new ninja 300 looks pretty similar to it's 600cc and 1000cc brothers. also the 300 comes with a slipper clutch which is pretty sweet. you don't normally find that on that size of bike.

beating your friends when you have the highest power to weight ratio is hardly a challenge if you're all similar in skill. on the street you'll be pushing yourself to the limit but not the bikes. that's usually where all the trouble comes from when your survival reactions kick in.

you never know what will happen on the street environment. you might be taking all your precautions and something could just happen that would cause you or someone else harm. you can't predict what other motorists will do. racing snowmobiles and skydiving are controlled environments and both pretty damn safe when compared to riding any type motorcycle on the street.

^^this this this. My biggest fear about getting a bike is the other people. Seattle (mainly eastside drivers where I now live) are f**king idiots.

And yes, I have my helmet, gloves and my jacket that's armored. I just need to pick up some pants and boots next.

There is a reason most of the best motorcycle riders in the world ride bikes that are under 600cc. There is NO rider I have ever met that can ride a 600cc sport bike to it's potential on the street let alone anything bigger than that.

I have met tons of guys that would kill for a 250 or 300 newer sport bike. Myself included. I would absolutely rape one and have a blast doing it and I have been riding almost 15 years 5 of them were highly dedicated to riding at the track. I spent a lot of time and money on track days. Lost a couple bikes to mistakes during those days as well.

I'm also enrolling in that rider class. I just need to pick a day.

As far as track days go, what do you do for preparation (besides seat time)? I've always wondered. I have a gal friend who races regularly and I always wondered.

I agree. A 600 is the most you need to ride on the streets unless you track it regularly. But a 250/300 just isn't enough for me.

Still working out the details, but he's a guy in our integra crew and wants longer gears so he wants to trade his b16 trans for my ls with some cash on my end. I'm hoping it goes through. That'll give me a head start on my GSR/B16 trans swap.

the things i can think of off the top of my head are
tires and brakes must be in good condition
remove the mirrors
disconnect the headlight and brake light
tape over the headlight, brake, and turn signals
find out if you need to replace your coolant with water
suspension setup
remove the license plate and bolts
you may be required to safety wire parts on the bike

if you have two piece leathers they will probably have to zip together or you can use a 1 piece suit. also you may be required to wear a back and/or chest protector.

some things depend on the track or class you'd be participating in.

As you said, he never could push the R6 to it's potential (the goddamned bike has 108hp!). I'm sure he would have got his money's worth out of a smaller sport bike, but he loved the feel and style of the R6. It fit him. He was considering an R1, but felt it was overkill.

People buy R1's for the same reason that people buy a Lamborghini. Do you think those dudes owning Gallardos are driving them to their full potential? I don't think so. They own them for their own reasons.. styling, lifelong dream, status symbol etc. The same can be said about super bikes like Hayabusas and Ducati 999R's. Badass bikes that all of us would no doubt happily take if one were given to us (myself included. I'd LOVE a Ducati).

M

I'm too excited for this car.
