I'll need the alienbee's power capabilties (for example - the b1600's 640w/s) for certain shots. My lighting gear list (and reasons):
One B1600 - Main light
Two B800 - For rim's/back lighting, etc
Vegabond II power pack
one AB 22" beauty dish - will be used on the B1600 most often. I like how you're able to use it even when its a lil bit windy out, and its not affected as much as a softbox or an umbrella would be. I also like the soft, even light that it puts out...which is something that I'll need when I do group(band) portraits. it'll also work well with weddings.
Now - stands...what about stands?
I've worked with the AlienBee LS3900 13' stands and they are BEEFY. Really wide foot print, thick piping, etc.
So, 3 LS3900's for all three strobes, AND (there's also an AND) the AlienBee Boom arm + weight. Why? I like the effect that you get when you put your main light source over the subject. That's my own personal preference. You never know when you might want a strobe really high up for a certain look etc.
Is that it for light modifiers? No...!
Probably 2 of their large soft boxes and one large octabox.
Soft boxes would be good for the rim as well, for when you want a soft rim light instead of a hard one. The large octabox would also be good for the main light when you are looking to get different catch lights.
John - You would probably be fine with a couple Vivitar 285's - they have adjustable zoom heads, adjustable power, compact, lightweight, get the job done. You could make your own beauty dish for those and buy a lil boom stand off of eBay or something. Probably a soft box or two as well.
