Maybe the foreground is too distracting in this one? Crop it out?

My favorite jiujitsu guy Roger Gracie attempting a choke on Andre Galvao at Worlds in Long beach earlier this year. I played with it a bit in photoshop.

Some of these photos don't even look like photos anymore. Too much photoshopping.

I'm still seeing way too much HDR and some serious work with the Unsharp Mask tool. I think at some point it becomes a digital illustration more than a photo, it's no longer representing what you saw when you took the photo.

no matter how much i read up on it, i'll never understand the unsharp mask tool :what: i cant use it because i have no idea what it does

i think alot of people see dave hill, etc...and think thats how to get famous, digitize the crap out of your pics  take some time to look into the long standing NG photographers  maybe not as glamorous, but awesome none-the-less

I've been reading up on flash photography for the past 4 months so far. Spending lots of time on the strobist site and strobist flickr, as well as taking notes from pretty decent photographers on photograph-on-the.net

i'm a camera ricer

The way i see it, everyone always talks about how they think they've figured out the dave hill effect, or the dragan effect ,etc etc. i just see no point in it. why would you want to copy somebody else? I'd rather be myself and have my own style, you know?
just my opinion

My best advice as a professional is to go out and take photos instead of reading all the time. Switch the camera to full manual control and go shoot. Don't allow yourself any digital aids, just suffer through taking bad shots and adjusting to make it better. The best gift of the DSLR is the instant review of what you've done, which means you can adjust right then and there instead of waiting until you're in the dark room.

Yeah that's what I've started doing. When I first got my DSLR it was using the 8 auto modes. I rarely use them now. I'm usually in S,A, or M. I've gotten my fair share of bad pics as of now lol I have an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens. I would really like to get an 18-200mm to make it quicker/easier to take pics in changing situations.
