H22 vs B18 vs B16

Ok it seems that everyone is against the h22..... what I was going to do originally was to swap the b16 and mod it to get it faster but then this guy told me about the b18 and it is way more torque then the b16 and you'll start off at 15 flat instead of 15.7 with the b16 and its only a couple hundred more..... so I did all the research like a did with the b16 and everything i would need... then this other guy told me those engines are slow compared to the h22... with the h22 in your car you'll be running 13.8 with nothing done to it.... well I knew this couldn't be that great of a swap because if it was everyone would be doing it the engine was so cheap...... but there ended up being all these problems you run into with this swap... so i'm back at zero again.... and i'm stuck on which engine to get.... my goal is to run low 13's on street tires and 12's with slick..... and most importantly I want a RELIABLE car.... i'd perfer to go N/A but if turbo or supercharger is a must i'll do that as long as it won't mess up my engine... please post your opinions on which engine will get me to low 13's the quickest, easiest, cheapest, and most RELIABLE <- most important... Thanks for all your help....

-I DO NOT WANT TO KEEP MY STOCK ENGINE PLEASE NOBODY SAY TURBO IT

There's no replacement for displacement. Although I think the H22 is the most trouble some to install, i think it's worth it. Just that it's kinda heavy. I'd go B18. But since I have no money, I think I'll go for a b16. lol..

arn't fully built b18's and fully built b16's (NA motors) really even in the 1/4 mile... i herd there .2 or something difference....

i prefer b18s because of displacement over the b16. h22 is a good engine but parts are hard to come by. the bigger the desplacement, the more hp/tq.

these 4 words do not go together (quickest, easiest, cheapest, and most RELIABLE)

if you want to be cheap, go for a b16. a b16 with the same mod as b18 on the same car. the b18 will win easily. to get to low 13s n/a on a 6th gen coupe with a b18c1 daily driven will cost you atleast $5k and thats not even including the swap. for a c5 you maybe look at atleast $4k

Go with an ls/vtec, swap in some ctr pistons to up the compression ratio and the throw in some ctr or other after market cams. The reason most people dislike the h22 is its not as easy to swap as a b-series, its heavier then the b-series and there isn't as much aftermarket support for it either.

Guess ill be makin a sticky tomorrow on the swaps for you guys (i dont mind my car is still sitting at the local honda dealer with a rod sticking out the back of the block cuz it was thrown off the bearing almost 3 weeks ago and they still havent begun working on it cuz the damn warrenty company is jerkin me off. Oh well, rebuilt engine for a 50 dollar deductable, cant really argue (29 miles left on warrenty =))

Now that i vented... the h22 is a more powerful engine, however if you do the swap (this is speaking generally) you wont have a/c or power steering mainly because it won't fit in with the swap. The engine is also much heavier then the b18/b16 so you dont gain as much of the power. You lose some steering because the engine is heavier. The choice between a b18 and b16 is pretty much the same as asking what color to choose... choose what fits you best (some will like some won't) the b18's have a higher potential however, the chances that your going to build her up to full potential is unlikely so go with what engine you get cheaper (b16 most likely.) If you have a d-series look into a rebuilding it up vs. the swap and build up... i gurantee you it will be cheaper to make a 13s d-series then a 13-s b-series (however, the 13s will be the wall for the d-series while the b-series still has room for improvment.) Hope it helps -Brian

thanks guys thats some good info.... i'm sure it would be cheaper to make my engine i have now 13's but I think everything about SOHC is a joke... the vtec, the pickup, the way it sounds.... i just don't like anything about it... i am def. doing a swap... i would do the ls/vtec but it is too unreliable... i just wish there was less options for me and more like here is what you have to do this is what you get.... with the civic it is like ok you can do this that these or those and there's so many different opinions on everything.... but thats good/bad... has anybody ever built up a b16 to run 13's N/A?

A guy i know ran a 14.0 in his eg hatch with a b16 n/a with a fairly crappy 60' time, until something went in the bottom end and he had to limp his car home. Now he is building an ls/vtec and should be running a mid 13 with the same combo that he had in the b16. If u don't want to go with a ls/vtec then just go with the b18c1 and swap in the same parts as i recommended putting in the ls/vtec.

So pretty much b16's don't have much potential going NA... lets say i get a b18c1 and turbo it... i have herd these motors are ideal for turbos. Lets say i replace pistons and axels and whatever it may be i need to replace before i get a turbo... how unreliable is a turbo... if i run the turbo at low psi about 6 will my engine blow up like all the other engine's i've herd about.... this will be a daily driven car....

I vote for the H22! its a pain to install and i highly recommed that you get everything that you need to make it run right and handle without a problem...cuz you'll get teh most power with that engine.

does anybody know if a b16 can run 13's with out turbo or supercharger? would it be more money over to make a b16 run 13's or a b18???

If you don't want to do any work (other then the swap) take a look at www.dh-racing.com They have a n/a 12.5 b16. They also have alot of other built motors to give you an idea of what you can build and what your results might be.

h22 is da best for straights, and as i understand you want a car for straights. so it is worth to mess ya head and do the pretty hard h22 swap.

i would and will go the b18 way, coz i like curves, tracks.

what was said about the h22 swap and losing your power steering and ac can be avoided because im also in the same situation as this guy and have been doing some research. Enjo makes a set of motor mounts for the 6th gen series that moves the motor over enableing you to keep your ac and power steering. cant really give my input cause im in the same boat but still thought id throw my .02 in.

There's some locals civic in here that had swapped to H22's and the A/C and Power Steering works/fits fine.

yes, but take a look at their radiators... still a single core, your deff. going to want a dual core if your boosting her (even the expensive aluminum radiators are bigger). It can be done, just more effort. If you got the time money and patience then by all means go for it.

here are some reason why i dont think ls/vtec is a good idea.

1. Headgaskets fail, often
2. Overheating is very common
3. Oiling is a major problem (both pressure and flow from VTEC head)
4. No oil squirters for the pistons
5. Long stroke, short rod, not good for high RPM use
6. B18A/B rods are weaker than other B series VTEC rods
7. B18A/B blocks aren't that much cheaper than B18C blocks
8. I haven't seen many LS/VTEC's running in the quick class

the fast ls/vtec N/A i can think of is lesie durst, but her ls/vtec is stroked to a 2.2 and its hitting 10.5. other then that a regular ls/vtec 1.8l is 11.5

i seen many ls/vtec, and i notice they start having problem before 30k miles.

I have a B16

And I took out the power steering pump and never had AC in my old LX of 1991. I left the power steering lines attached to the steering rack and looped them into each other and filled that with fluid.
The only thing I have had trouble with is my fan only kicks on the lower speed, and if it gets too hot after a bit and I turn it off, it won't start.
I think I might need a bigger h2o pump because holding the RPMs up around 2 grand seems to rush the cool water back in.
As far as build up, when I can, I am going to drop type-r stuff in, i.e. pistons and those guts, cams, and whatever else. I am a big n/a fan, bore it out and polish that shizz. If that ain't good enough, bore it out more. I figure by the time I am satisfied, my car will be a time attack car for the track, rather than an autocrosser.
Who knows where I can get pistons with 6" round heads?
