Why wouldn't they? Especially a LIST of VINs that could have vehicles in their area.

Let's take this for example:
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/car.thieves.commuter.2.1106961.html

How much would a thief LOVE to have a list of VINs in front of them that could tell them where a vehicle is, instead of having to go out and scout and search for one, when they could have that list and they could know for almost certainty that THAT vehicle in the area.
You do realize that unless you know what dealership the car was purchased/serviced at, you need more than photo ID? Because the registered owner has to be listed in their computer, and if they've never done business at that dealership, then they have to show vehicle registration ..... ?

And this photo ID thing is awesome. You'd have to KNOW the name of the person who's car you're stealing.

That story you posted, I'm betting that 99% of those cars were stock vehicles with the dealership placard stil on them, and they were not 96-00 Civics. I'm wiling to bet not a single one of them was a 9-13 year old Honda.

Read the story again, this s**t is elaborate. This is a ring of thieves targeting cars they KNOW will be at a certain place at a certain time, a zero-risk-factor. These are not people's cars at home or the office.

No, I wouldn't. It's what I spent most of middle school doing. Novel was awesome.
Novel was one of the worst solutions I had ever seen. I was showing my IT teacher in 6th grade on how a student get around it.

You seem to be under the impression that there is a publicly accessible database out there that will give you someone's name, address, and phone number and a mapquest to their house when you punch in a VIN. Maybe if you're going to hack the FBI to steal a Civic ...
You seem to think some thieves are stupid and don't have any connections.

Again, you seem to think that some thieves don't have connections to get duplicate keys made.

How exactly would:

2000 Civic Si
1HGEM115XL108845
Flamenco Black Pearl
Olympia, WA

help a car thief?

Exactly why would that be marketable?

And I already brought up the part about keys and you kept saying it had nothing to do with your posts. That's why I mentioned how a dealership probaly will catch you on camera if you go to buy a key.

No Regrets, this entire argument you put forth is ridiculous.

OPh, and your opinion really doesn't matter because you don't own the type of car that I'm trying to track.

I'm not making anyone give me their VIN, but it they believe your fanciful story... WOW.

A car is at thousands of times more risk being parked outside than it is having it's VIN on my list.

What you posted gives a thief a specific area to look for a car.

Instead of them having to searching surround areas, they have an exact specific point, a city, to keep an eye out for that car.

It's like putting a sticker on your Civic on all windows, of the city you live in. Someone is going to use that information, and I can bet more than likely, not for a good reason.

I like that you're still bringing up this file as if it's inevitable theft is the most likely of scenarios leading to the theft of cars.

No, but I do deal with computer, security and networking all day, so that validates my argument. Your opinion doesn't matter because you don't deal with this type of things all day.

Gee, it sure is good that Civics don't have their VIN on the window and that they're really difficult to break into.

I like that you think someone posting about how they have a file with a number of VINs of cars that are stolen regularly as no big deal.

Gee, it sure is good that those thieves don't have a piece of paper with a VIN and telling them where in a area the vehicle is.

You deal with elaborate hacker car thief rings? On a daily basis? Or ever?

^Watch another troll come in here and say you're a car thief and threaten to call the police again. :rolf:
yeah, troll's name is No Regrets

can we keep this on topic please. I know it doesn't matter but I don't really want this to turn into a multiple page argument between a few members. even tho it already has. If you don't think it's safe to post your vin then don't but don't worry about anyone else's s**t either.

Basically you're trying to trash my project for this fantasy you have in your head.

So again, why would a thief want the VINs besides the one reason I had already mentioned that you said had nothing to do with the argument?

I deal with computer security, which means I deal with hackers on a daily basis, both blackhat and whitehat. I know how they think, what they want, and basically anything with some kind of value attached to it is worth their time.

YOU might think it's a fantasy, until it really happens.

Are you that ignorant where you haven't anything I've said except what I've quoted that you said?

I'm going to chalk this up to common IT paranoia. I've got quite a few friends who work in this field, and they are the most paranoid people about the internet ever.

You need to relax, man. I've worked in the food-service industry for a long time, it doesn't stop me from eating out. Just because you see all the dirty things that can happen doesn't mean they do.

You're right, I do tend to get a little paranoid when it comes to computer security or plain technology security

Sorry to Eran or Amy if I came off as an a*****e, or disrespectful, did not mean that, was just voicing my opinion.
