Hi,

I'm new here and I'm sorry if the questions I'm about to ask you people are stupid or noobish, but I really need to know. Now that I warned you people here my questions:First I was looking in my local classifieds and I came across an add for a 1993 Honda Civic DX coupe with 90K miles,17" Katana rims,Intake, and an exhaust upgrades for only $3800!I Thinking about taking up on this offer and purchasing this car,but I need to know if having a v-tec is really important in terms of performance.I mean is there turbo kits available for the non-v-tec engines?Could I make them fast without doing an engine swap? Can I do as much to the engine as say the Civic EX?You see I need to know these things before I go out and purchace this car.I was originally looking for a EX model, but when I saw this add I started having second thoughts. What do you people think?Should I go for the car or not?Have you people personally seen non-v-tec powered Civics kick A$$ at the race track?Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
D.A.C

P.S.
Do 5th Gen. Civic DX coupes have power steering? Also does anybody know any good non-v-tec Civic websites?

vtec helps in performance
there are turbos for non vtec engines
engine swaps are better then beefing up a sohc IMO
I would say swap no matter what civic you get except si
3800 is too much where I live, you can get dx coupse stock at like 1.5-2k, even with mods, its better for you to pick the mods you want exactly. So I say go buy a cheap stock car, spend the rest on what you want.
I have seen non vtecs go fast with turbo but they spent alot of money to make it happen, i mean alot.

mate, that sounds like a very good buy if it's in a good state. and with the money you have left over, you can afford a B16A2 engine swap. a b-series engine is important if you want performance in 175+ HP range.

i wouldn't use a lot of money to tune my d- series engine, because you would use a lot of money to get just little performance. i mean... the money you have to put into that engine to make it perform even close to a B16A2 (which is a cheap, B-series engine with 170HP) is enormous. probably higher than the cost of a B16A2 engine swap. If the chassis and the rest of that car is in a good state, I would consider buying it and eventually putting in a B16A2. You can get a complete B16A2 swap for around $2500, including everything you need, delivered to your door (excluding labour).

the DX has 102HP standard. If you tune the hell outta it (for a LOT of money) you might get close to the B16A2 (170HP), but you won't have much room for extra tuning (beyond 170HP) and your engine will allready be performing at almost double the power it was originally built for. remember that you most probably also have to do something about your transmission, clutch, and so on, aswell. expensive, mate.

bottom line:
if the chassis and everything is good on it, buy it. then go for an engine swap when you can afford it.

YEP! like they said...get a cheapest car u can find and swap a motor, its just like gettin a SI but cheaper and faster. of course u dun interior like SI, but with the same price to pay for an SI u could get better interior than it.

I hope im right ! HAHA

In my opinion, I love VTEC. lol. I've been driving my Mom'z '98 LX for a long time, and when I came across a '93 EX. I almost had to have it. Now I can't stand driving my mom'z non-vtec motor. Especially when I go out wit my friends and we fool around on the freeway. Car can't pull. But if you're gonna do forced induction then that's cool too.

are you trying to say that in a good or bad way? a lot of people would much rather have a non-vtec car to turbocharge. people turbocharge LS's all the time with great results, and people turbo b16s all day long too- it totally depends how you build it and what youre building it for.

well fi can work on vtec just fine its just that you cant add as much boost do to its high compression...with non vtec and low compression you can cram more boost in

SiGuy,
buy a complete swap from a place like http://www.hmotorsonline.com or somewhere else. That includes all you need, including tranny. So you could sell your old stuff if you find someone interested in buying it.

well basically vtec is much better.. but dohcvtec is the bomb.. now if you want race i suggest the 2nd gen b16.. alot of people use this motor cause it is easy to find.. but what they really should know is that the b16 has got a near perfect r/s ratio.. and basically what that means is that you can revv it to high levels and wont really hurt th engine much.. but if your really looking for power.. 2nd gen b16/ ctr head/ ctr camshafts/ ctr cams/ ctr intake manifold/ ctr throttle body and without a doubt you will be in the mid 13.. forget all this single cam s**t.. you can throw that out the window.. but look up all types of info from different sites so you can actually learn about that motor.. you will be convinced of the hidden talents
