Im looking to get a really good radar detector cuz im tired of all the cops riding my ass, so im wanting to try and avoid them maybe, and be able to have something to give me a heads up to tell me to slow down or stop doin anything illeagal. and advice would be greatly apreciated, thanks

I have an Escort. i suggest them. decent price. good quality. Plus i havent gotten stopped since i got mine. And now they have the 9500i Passport with a gps brain in it so it can remember whats a false alarm and whats not.
Why?
Highway patrols departments are going to a laydar type radar that can not be detected and also they are going to an older way of traffic enforcement and that is time distance . just take alook at some of the city streets and highways nowadays they are putting white strips to start the time distance and a white strip at a certain point to finish. so save your cash and don't brake the law and you will be fine. laydar is a laser detection unit that can detect ANY vehicle they want. no more K.Ka X band units anymore. seems like ALL departments are going to this (key word SEEMS)

There is no detector that will be a sure fire way to not get pulled over. I have one, but I still know when and where I can speed. It's just a way to help you figure out if there may be cops around. I find it helpful when I pass a cop and I know he isn't using a radar gun at me. I think a lot of cops leave them on all the time, so it helps ID them early.
Other then that, just drive smart.
BTW, I've been pulled over twice and no comments from the cops. Although I have mine mounted really high by the rear view mirror where most people don't put it. It is somewhat inconspicuous.

There's only a couple of states radar/laser detectors are illegal in.

Your extremely incorrect. I have mine blatantly displayed at the top of my windshield and the police cant do s**t about it. Radar detctors are legal, radar SCRAMBLERS are illegal. However if you feel uncomfortable you can just reach up and use the quick release and throw it on the seat or in the gloce compartment.Jmoto911 said:

All information you stated says that they are not illegal, which is true in all but two states. But, I was stating that police officers are way more inclined to give you a ticket rather then let you off with a warning when they see a radar detector. Both my parents are police officers and I know EVERY cop on the police force where my parents work and have talked to at least 25 or more of them about it and they all say that they are more likely NOT to give a warning and just give a ticket when they see a radar detector because it just tells them that you were trying to hide something and trying to get away with something so they decide its better just to give you a ticket to teach you a lesson.Lil_falco said:

And no, you can't get a ticket for having a radar detector but there is always something illegal on you car. Especially because we all drive Civics.
