im bored. story time.

so the main bolt that holds the alternator to the block on my motor is stripped to f**k, it will stay in place but keeps shaking loose, so I went to get a new one, and decided I would just go to the local Honda dealership and go to their AMAZING PARTS DEPARTMENT!

Oh joy.

I go up and ask for a timing bolt screw for a 99-00 Civic Si, specifically for b16a motor.

The guy asks me whether its a 99 or 2000, I say it doesnt matter, they are the same and that he can put one in and get the bolt for me.

He gets grumpy, explains to me that I am the owner of the car and should at least know the year it was made.

I tell him its a 94 hatchback with a JDM b16a, not usdm B16a2... but all the bolts are the f**king same and he just needs to look it up.

He gets all grumpy and finally just goes "FINE... 1999 IT IS" and i chuckle. they dont have the bolt anyway.

I tell him I don't give enough of a f**k to order one... so I just leave. The 3-4 guys in the parts department all walk outside and stare at me as I leave, so I hit VTEC for them.

I'm a ricer.

I get the other side at work... I get some old guy coming in and asking for a part "for a 350". My computer system goes like this:
Year --> Make --> Model/Trim --> Engine

Then it takes you to the parts selection. There isn't much I can do without someone telling me a year.

I like Hondas... I like Toyotas.. I like IMPORTS. I have no idea what 350 you need or how they might vary over the years. Something tells me a 350 in 1974 is a bit different from a 350 in 1994 for example though. Hell, I couldn't even tell you if they were made both of those years and I really don't care.

(That's okay, I'm the one who gets called whenever anyone starts off with " it's a 19__ Honda....." When Someone can't find a Civic wagon lited, I'm the one who comes to tell them the Wagovan, even though it doesn't say Civic.. is the model they're looking for. Few peopel in the store have ever even seen a Wagovan much less know what it is. i've also been dubbed "the deatil expert" and the row with detailing stuff is my row. Any and all questions about detailing, cleaning, etc get sent to me, no questions asked.)

Of course these guys get all gruff when you tell them you need a year to start with. "It doesn't matter." "Well, could you give me an idea...?"

Even better they'll come in for a part... you ask for the information, year ofl vehicle, make, model, etc..... yet they fail to mention the motors been swapped until you look it all up, or worse, until after you've pulled the part.

Oh, and don't get me started on rebuilt titles. :???: I feel sorry fore the guy who's headlight/turn signal switch went out on his '96 Taurus.. . but none of the parts inthe computer match up at all. Tehy're all one piece (both levers)... his is assembled in two pieces (one lever per piece). :( Hope he gets that worked out.

Within a week I learned some things about cars.... Ford Rangers are the biggest pieces of s**t in the world. Ford pickups and Chevy pickups are always needing some kind of parts. The most common part I'm asked for for Dodge trucks is... locking gas caps. (No, I don't really care for Dodge, but this is true.) Intrepids don't run on gas, they run on brake pads. Sebring Convertibles that cost you $500 cost that much because they need lots of parts replaced. No one knows what trim Saturn it is or if it's single or dual overhead cam. Not even the mechanic that was just messing under the hood of it for an hour. The Chevy Aluminium comes in the form of a car and a van. Sometimes you need to replace your front rotaries. Roughly a third of people know what kind of rear brakes they have (disc or drum). No one with a Ranger knows which braking system they have. Late gen Ford Thunderbirds will never find a match for the correct brakes. It should be against the law to send your wife to pick up car parts. She'll just call you to ask all the info all over again anyway. Don't have someone else call for you when you're right there anyway. They will probably get just as confused as they ever have been about cars and put you on the phone anyway.

Oh, and I was told by a customer that when they called for lifters for an older Camaro, Autozone asked, "Are those for the trunk or the hood?" My customer was pleased to hear me chuckle about that and mention I think they were thinking of lift supports. :lol:
