How many of you who are all "I respect Cops" and blah blah blah are white?
Does it matter? Really?

Mine comes from being behind the scenes with family and friends that are LEOs and knowing the amount of training they have to go through and what they have to deal with on a daily basis when out in the field. I have also been very close to officers that have been killed in the line of duty because some meth head gets pulled over for a broken tail light, has a warrant, doesn't want to go to jail, and shoots during a normal traffic stop.

There are 2 very tragic shootings that happened here in the past year and I was close to 1 of the officers that died. 1 of the other officers in the same shooting went to high school with my best friend. A guy walked into a coffee shop while the officers were having a coffee before starting their shift and opened fire.

I have full respect for officers as they are out there risking their lives to make our lives more comfortable and safe. I have the same respect for our men and women in the armed forces.

the only time i ever disrespected a police officer was after he started harassing me and threatening to take me to jail and impound my car for a DUI that wasn't even possible, he wouldnt just give me a breathalyzer from the get go. Took me out of the car, put me in handcuffs behind it on the street and continued to threaten to take me to jail.

In the end, he wrote me an 8pt wreckless for allegedly intentionally running a "stop light" (" " because the intersection i ran the stop light at didn't even have a stop light, it had stop signs for the cross street of which I was not traveling on) that didn't exist at the intersection he said i ran it.

I don't recall exactly, word for word, what i said to him during the process. But i started polite until he said he was going to take me to jail because i smelt like alcohol, and i was getting a dui. I seriously hadn't had even so much as ONE beer in over a week.

Other than that incident, i think showing respect for them (as long as they show it for me) has gotten me out of a few tickets.

My uncle is a police chief, so I feel obligated to respect most cops I come across. That being said, I was pulled over, lawfully, no complaints, for having a headlight out, on my way to the store to get a new one by a state police officer. He was pretty harsh and called me a liar, that I wasn't going to change it, that I was just like everyone else and breaking the law while he had to uphold the justice system, all while I had literally just left a friends house to head home, and noticed it was out thus my detour to the store. I apologized for having a headlight out on my way home at night, he asked me if I had been drinking, which I hadn't, made me do a sobriety test, all which I was cool for the whole time, while he was literally making me look like a criminal. I passed all the stuff, he let me off with a warning (oddly enough), and headed on his way again. He actually was parked in the back of the wal-mart (only store open at the time) parking lot when I pulled in, whether or not he was waiting to see if I actually was going, I do not know, but I took note of his license plate so I could talk to my uncle and see what his thoughts were, and if he thought I should report the officer for harassing me or not. I didn't end up calling my uncle for a few days, and literally the next day, after I left class, I happened to see the same guy, pulling onto the freeway about 5 or 6 cars behind me. I didn't really care at the time, but from school to my exit is like 4 miles, maybe, dude proceeded to get in the fast lane, go by everyone at about 100, no lightbar or anything flashing, and then pulled off my exit...to go to the local burger stand. I thought maybe something was wrong, a robbery, who knows, but the same exact time, after class the next few days, I saw the same dude breaking the law by speeding and not signaling etc., to go to a burger stand. I don't disrespect police officers by any means, but it's kind of hard to actually show respect to them when they break more laws themselves, than some average citizens do. Being above the law should not be a perk of the job.

Report them. If you see an officer breaking the law, report them. You have the right to ticket an officer. Take down the license plate number, and any other identifiable markings, time and date, go to the court house and do what needs to be done to file a ticket.

you should see them around here... crazy s**t.

i treat police the way i treat anyone else... which is respectfully until they deserve otherwise. i've ran into some assholes, some that are just normal, and some hella cool cops. :what:

i was mouthy to the guy who pulled me over for my exhaust 'cuz he was a jerk about it, made a comment about how kids modify their cars, and he was also wrong for issuing the noise ticket in the first place. which i got dismissed anyway. i was a little pissy with the washington state patrol guy who pulled me over on the god damn freeway for a stupid headlight being out. i s**t you not, i got pulled over at least four times for that within a couple days... my fault for not taking care of it for a couple days... but... highway patrol? for a headlight? really? :what:

the cops who gave me my failure to yield the right of way ticket when this stupid teenage cunt nearly totaled my car were more pissed that i was running around pissed as all hell and cussing. when my grandfather's wife went to talk to her - very civilly, i might add - she copped a total attitude and was blowing her off. really frickin' rude.

then there's been some cool ones. turned left into the far lane and got pulled over for that (wtf), and dude was just like... "it's 3am, just making sure you're not drinking and driving"... which i wasn't. so he said good night and went on his way.

theeeeeeeeeeeen last year i got pulled over in san francisco for my headlight. it's not out, the wiring is all jacked up and sometimes it's really dim and sags, so it's not the way it should be. i was in the city for an anime convention... i have my two friends from florida in my car - we're all in weird ass cosplay (screw through my head, stitches on my face, friends in revealing sort of clothing and fake blood), it's midnight, we're going to ihop.

so what happens? not only do i take the wrong freaking turn off and have to go over a HUGE ass bridge... twice... but i get pulled over... in the ihop parking lot. my tags were expired, so i'm thinking... OH s**t OH s**t OH s**t.

dude was acting like he was running plates and s**t (still registered in washington, ftw)... but he didn't say a word about my expired tags. he sat there and asked questions about our costumes and the convention and that... it's like he was so shocked at what freaks we were he forgot everything else.

before he left he just said that the dim headlight is the same as having it completely out to them, and for us to have fun and be careful around there late at night. that was WIN. i wanted to pass out from relief. the other cosplayers heading to the restaurant were like... "... what the hell did you do?"

around here i see police just put on their lights, no siren, just go through stop signs or red lights, they stop at the light if no one is coming from the sides or where they can get hit the go trhough with lights, get across the intersection and return to normal speed with no lights

Your brother broke the law, how does that make the cop a d**k? Since cars can easily be moved, a cop does NOT need a warrant to search it. If their is reasonable suspicion, they can search the car without the owners consent. That being said, since they took pictures of the car and then left.....it sounds like they went to show a witness who then confirmed that was the car they witnessed doing a burnout.....seems like reasonable suspicion to me.

And you know that you do NOT need to be read your rights right after being cuffed. You dont have to be read your rights at all. But if they dont read you your rights, you can say whatever you want and it will be admissible in court.
if you would have read my post completely i said i know he broke the law but you cant tell me the police handled it properly. they admitted to him there were no witnesses who said it was car. there was no reason to search his car. i know they dont have to have a warrant all they have to say is they were suspicious of a gun or drugs and they can legally search the car. but what i want to know is what made them suspicious? so a car parked in the parking lot with the other cars and nobody around is suspicious? there is also absolutely no way to prove he did it or it was even his car. thats why i said the cop acted like a complete d**k. i even told him what he did was stupid and he knows it was. but to just come up to the parking lot, look at some cars, then tow one when they have no idea who it was, your going to tell me thats not a d**k move? then to tell him the heard him burn out over there for ten minutes one day, seriously? the tires wouldnt last anywhere ten minutes, and once again they said they didnt actually see him do that, they just heard a loud car. bug f**king deal theres a ton of loud cars around.

I agree, they didnt handle it as well as they should have. And in this post you included some more details as well. Things differ from state to state a little bit, but I will agree that they were dicks about it. But I guess if he wasnt doing a burnout in the parking lot, they wouldnt have showed up in the first place :what:
knew this wouldnt end peacefuly
Right. Guys, if you want to discuss something, do it in a civil manner.

i completely agree with that. i told him that myself and he knows it. thats why i said most of the cops here are cool because i think they would have handled it alot differently(and correctly) but like i said, idk why but some cops seem to feel the need to show off their authority or something. he did nothing to even be arrested unless asking a question is illegal lol. i have no issues with most cops. but its just like the honda scene, a few idiots can completely ruin the image we get, just as a few stupid cops can easily ruin someones opinion on police.

Right. But what I like about the last couple people who posted is.....it seems they have had a genuinely poor experience, but it hasnt tainted their view on police as a whole.

x2, ive had bad experiences and one cop in my town hates every single teen, well acts like he does but that dosent mean all cops are bad, or dicks, yeah some here blow the red lights like i mentioned before, or abuse the power, but that dosent mean they all do,

a cop down the street will bust any teen party in the town except when his daughters (15 and 17) have parties he always lets them drink and one kid left one night (he dosent take keys away) and crashed his car down the road, that is what pisses me off but i wont disrespect an officer at all, they risk their lives and do this job because they love it,

yes there are dicks but dosent mean they all are, people that just jump to a conclusion is just a perfect example that one bad run in with an officer runis the image and they always hate them, people just judge instantly, sad how how people see officers and hate them

had the same cop respond to my last 2 car accidents..... Most egotistical dude outside of the DMV I have ever met. Every other cop I have no problem with, even this one. I show respect to get it thrown back in my face. but whatever to that dude lol :what:

No license now so I won't see him for a while

Like vjf said, this isn't the '50s.

My race has no impact on the respect I have for people that risk their lives for perfect strangers.

Every time I have been pulled over, it has been because I was breaking a traffic law. It had nothing to do with my race.

This post says it all. I have had about 7-8 encounters with police officers. All of them had to do with ME. Not that I had necessarily done something wrong, but they are DOING THEIR JOB. They showed up at my house one time when I had the Camaro. Somebody had called in a maroonish Camaro fishtailing around town, so they came knocking on my door. I was still respectful, and even though they seemed weary.....they respected me as well.

Another time I was on church property that I wasnt supposed to be on after dark, cops were called because people in the area were supposedly lighting s**t on fire. Which we were NOT doing, we were simply playing a joke on my friend. But they showed up, asked 2 or 3 questions. I was TOTALLY honest with them, let them know the whole story of what we were doing. They asked for my license, ran it, came back and just asked us to leave because we werent supposed to be there after dark.

If you treat them with respect, and show them honesty....they will treat you with respect back.
