I had a similar issue that I chased around for months. It drove me absolutely bonkers, even my tuner wasn't sure of the issue. It turned out to be a faulty MAP sensor.

No oil in the filter could be an oil pump issue, but also maybe not... especially if you checked the filter when the motor was cold. It's possible that the anti-drainback valve inside the filter itself is faulty. That just means that the oil inside the filter drained back out. When you start...

The motor in the car isn't from an 88. Sounds like it has a Z6 in it.

If you baby it, shift properly, and the car is up on maintenance, etc., it's possible. MPG varies because everyone has a different style of driving so there's really no one set answer as to an exact MPG.

It would not. But we cant rule out just yet that the overheating and oil in a spark plug hole are related. It could be two separate issues. Please answer HeX's questions as they're important in the troubleshooting process.

It could be the valve cover gasket too... get a valve cover gasket set and it should include the cylinder plug seals as well

It probably leaks when moving as well, but you wouldn't know. You were told it was the rear main seal... did you replace it? Oil pan might be tight but the gasket could still be bad. I would think that would go bad before the rear seal. Could also be leaking though the distributor o-ring, valve...
