I always thought they looked funny hanging out.
Big chunky plastic door edge guards wit reflectors and curb feelers are functional too.

TO AVOID BEING SHOCKED BY A STATIC CHARGE WHEN GETTING OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE
1) open door
2) press and hold 1 finger on the screw head in the door handle
3) step foot on ground
4) voila. no shock
