I think you need to talk to more people in the service....both newer and older to it. Recruiters tell you all the glorious things to get you on. Talk to someone who's actually in.

As for a relationship. ..look at it this way. If you don't join the military, what would you and her do for income? Can she support you both or pay at least half? My point is if she can't do either of those...chances are she can't handle you being away for any length of time-especially if she's not self sufficient currently.
I personally will not be involved with a guy in the military. Many times the maturity level isn't there that I need (not all men) and I prefer to have my partner around a lot. Plus. ..if you're on base, there are a LOT of skanks around. I don't have trust issues whatsoever, but ya just can't trust skanks.

Also keep in mind benefits are dwindling for all....military included. Do you think what is available now will be in 20 years? Everything can be amended...

Military has people out fighting for more benefits rather than just politicians. With the military you are still going to have better benefits than anyone else at your pay. I do agree somewhat with her stance on she can wait. As for maturity level that's funny. Their are skanks everywhere. Go to a bar skank, go to a mall skank, go to a fast food restaurant skanks. Lol

I haven't been as active per say as I should in this thread. I have spoken with many men and women that are currently serving or have served in the past. My I have four uncles that retired from the navy, a cousin in the marines, an uncle that retired from the army, both of my grandparents were in the army, every employee at my local shooting range are all former or current military and I talk to them often. I'm aware of the lies and bs that recruiters will feed people. I've only spoken with a recruiter twice in my life. Once in high school and again recently. I feel like I've heard a fair amount from each side, though one thing every one of them have in common, they all say they wouldn't change it for the world. They all say that the experiences they had and training they had were invaluable to the lives they live today. That's what I want. I want the training to fight for my country, protect my family, and even be a better police officer if I decide to do so further down the road.

I'm leaning into it pretty heavy, I just have to come to terms with some things and make the necessary adjustments here at home (helping my girl get on her feet) before signing on.

It's definitely not about the money. As previously mentioned there are plenty of private sector jobs that would pay more than military. I want this for the pride, and the service.

Do it! What job and brach are you considering?
Considering army. Haven't quite made up my mind yet as to what MOS. Had originally considered infantry but everyone seems to think that's a bad idea. Somebody's gotta do it.

If you have a choice, pick something that opens doors after military life is over. The infantry unit near my house deploys every single year so be prepared to spend a lot of time in the sand box with out career options when you get out.

So I've run into a particularly large snag. I'm not sure if I mentioned needing to get cleared on an ear reconstruction surgery (tympanoplasty), but I had this reconstruction about seven years ago (age 13), and hadn't really dealt with my ears since. I've always had slightly diminished hearing since, and never thought much of it. I went to the ear doctor the other day just to see how bad it was. I went to the same war doctor as I always did and he was excited to see me. He showed me in their records that they had recommended additional surgery. I had fluid behind my ear that needed to come out, he wanted to do another set of tubes. My parents never followed through with this and I never knew of it. So I have 7 years of fluid in my right ear. The way your hearing works is there are little bones back there that reverb sound. They are meant to be in air, not fluid. This explains my bad hearing in that ear. My doctors concern is that that fluid covering those bones for so long has eroded those bones and I'll have permanent hearing loss. This is the worst case scenario. This will disqualify me from not only the military, but police work, fire department, every thing I'm wanting to do. So the first step is to get this fluid out. I'm currently taking steroids and a nasal spray. My Eustachian tube (drainage tube) doesn't work like it should, so he's hoping these medicines will help the process. If they do not, and he's not optimistic, then I will have another set of tubes. If the tubes don't help, I will require another surgery. If the surgery does not help, I will have to have a surgery on my Eustachian tubes.

Praying for the best.

You didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand *why* you made it. I thought you'd have figured that out by now.

So y not jump on it :what:
Honestly just doesn't appeal to me. I definitely consider it as a last resort for some cash but it's not really something I can see myself doing for any extended amount of time.

With military I can justify the time away with world class tactical training that would benefit me for the rest of my life, a sense of pride in doing something for my country, and being surrounded with like minded people to an extent.

Climbing cell towers just isn't in my heart. I know it would be good money, but if I hated it I'd be miserable. If I walk away from my current job I can't hop right back in it. I have to be sure of my choice wherever I go. Job security is big for me.

So went for my follow up appointment with the ear doctor today to see how my ear responded to the steroids and nasal spray I've been taking. No signs of improvement. He said I may want to consider a hearing aid. This would disqualify me from military, police, fire, etc. I'm going to have another surgery to have tubes put in which will automatically keep me from enlisting for at least a year. The tubes have to fall out in time. He doesn't know for sure if this will help or not. Best case scenario, it helps and my hearing is restored, tubes fall out after a while, and then I'm able to possibly do military, but if not that, then police, and if not that, then fire. If they don't work, I can't do any of that. Trying to stay optimistic, just gonna have the surgery and go from there. All I can do really.

I feel f**kin heart broken, really. Just gotta push through.

My father told me "you take what you get, and you don't pitch a fit"
